Best Korean mountain hikes

Korean Mountain Hikes

1. Seoraksan

At 1,708 meters, Daecheongbong is Seoraksan's highest peak, and a favorite with novice mountaineers.

Depending on where you begin your journey, the trek to the top can be done in as little as three hours. Lower down, the popular Cheonbuldong Valley explodes into a riot of color come autumn.

But the two-hour trek to the top of Ulsan Bawi (876 meters) can be particularly rewarding, not just for the physical exercise, but also the sensational views of the eastern sea, Daecheongbong and the valleys below.

You can start from Sinheungsa, near the Kensington Star Hotel.

According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, fall foliage on Seoraksan peaked on October 17 this year. The colors generally hold until late October, however.

2. Bukhansan

Seoul, amidst its urban sprawl, has seven mountains.

But the greatest of these is perhaps Bukhansan, sometimes called the "lungs of Seoul" for the role it plays in helping clear out that CO2.

The three-hour hike up to Baegundae, Seoul's highest peak (836 meters) beginning from the Bukhansanseong Hiking Support Center near Gupabal Station (subway line three), is one of the most popular trails.

And for good reason: steep enough to keep your feet busy, with a superb bird's-eye view of Seoul, it's still perfectly doable for even the casual weekend hiker.

The peak date for fall foliage is October 26.

3. Taebaeksan

Dangun, the legendary founder of Korea's ancient kingdom Goguryeo, was supposedly born on a mountain called Taebaeksan. On the 1,567-meter highest peak, Janggunbong, there's Cheonjedan, "altar for heavenly rites," where, in an earlier time, the devout would perform rites to honor the gods.

Taebaeksan really blooms in the winter when the branches sparkle with frozen snow. In Korean, the sight is literally referred to as "snow flowers."

Its autumns, however, are sadly underrated. While less monochromatically striking, autumn weather makes for good walking, and Taebaeksan's leaves are also a-changing.

Despite its height, the way up to Janggunbong is more of a gentle slope than a craggy scarp; getting there should not take more than two hours from the Baekdansa (Baekdan Temple) entrance.

4. Songnisan

The most important thing to know about Songnisan is that it's a damn good-looking mountain.

In autumn, the leaves die in varying shades of scarlet alongside the weird and wonderful rock formations that make up Songnisan's cliffs.

The highest peak is Cheonwangbong at 1,058 meters, but the loveliest is cloud-shrouded Munjangdae at 1,054 meters. The view from Munjangdae is also spectacular, and if you start at Shilla-era Buddhist temple Beopjusa, you can get there in three hours.

Tip: Beopjusa also has a Temple Stay program, if you'd like to "leave mainstream society" for a bit longer than an afternoon trek. It's also home to the peninsula's largest Buddha statue, 33 meters of wisdom incarnate covered in gold leaf.

The fall foliage peaks on October 26.

5. Jirisan

The granddaddy of Korea's mainland mountains, Jirisan is huge. The park that encompasses the mountain's many peaks is Korea's largest national park (484 square kilometers). The highest peak, Cheonwangbong (1,915 meters), is second only to Hallasan.

But one of the best places to really get into the spirit of autumn is in the valleys, such as the spectacularly beautiful Piagol Valley to the south. You can begin at Yeongok Hiking Support Center and walk the entire length (five hours), or linger in place to gawk.

The fall foliage peaked on October 18, but the valleys, which change later than the peaks, should still have some red left in them for a few weeks yet.

7. Hallasan

Hallasan, a volcanic mountain that makes up most of Jeju Island as well as South Korea's tallest peak (1,950 meters), is also more of a winter player.

But that doesn't mean you can't appreciate its autumns (as well as the volcanic cones or lava flows that also decorate the landscape).

Many visitors start at Hallasan National Park’s Visitors Center and make their way up along the Eorimok Trail, but this trail won't take you to the peak, where Baeknokdam, the crater lake at the top, awaits.

The Seongpanak Trail, which starts at Seongpanak, to the east, will take some patience -- five hours' worth -- to complete, but it takes you to the lake.

Fall foliage is due to peak on October 30.

Chuseok: Korean Thanksgiving Day

Chuseok: Korean Thanksgiving Day

Chuseok, also known as Korean Thanksgiving Day, is one of the most important and festive holidays of the year. This year, Chuseok falls on Thursday, September 19th, but the holiday period actually lasts for three days in total – including the day before and after Chuseok. Traditionally, Koreans return to their ancestral hometowns to celebrate with their families, causing one of the biggest traffic jams of the year as people often take to the road to reach the provinces outside of Seoul.

The meaning of Chuseok (Hangawi)

Chuseok is one of Korea’s three major holidays, along with Seollal (New Year’s Day) and Dano (the 5th day of the 5th month of the lunar year) and is also referred to as Hangawi (한가위). Han means “big” and gawi means “the ides of August/Autumn” (August 15th according to the lunar calendar is when the full harvest moon appears). Hangawi/Chuseok was the day on which Koreans, an agrarian people throughout most of history, gave thanks to their ancestors for the year’s harvest, and shared their abundance with family and friends.
Although the exact origin of Chuseok is unclear, the tradition may be found at ancient religious practices that centered around the moon. The sun’s presence was considered routine, but the full moon that came once a month was considered a special and meaningful event. Therefore, harvest festivities took place on the day of the bright, full moon or August 15 on the lunar calendar system.

Chuseok Customs

On the morning of Chuseok Day, foods prepared with the year’s fresh harvest are set out to give thanks to ancestors through Charye (ancestor memorial service). After Charye, families visit their ancestors’ graves and engage in Beolcho, a ritual of clearing the weeds that may have grown up over the burial mound. After dusk, families and friends take walks and gaze at the beauty of the full harvest moon or play folk games such as Ganggangsullae (Korean circle dance).

Charye (ancestor memorial services)

On Chuseok morning, family members gather at their homes to hold memorial services (called Charye, 차례) in honor of their ancestors. Formal Charye services are held twice a year: during Seollal (Lunar New Year’s Day) and Chuseok. The difference between the two services is that during Seollal the major representative food is Tteokguk, a rice cake soup, while during Chuseok the major representative foods are freshly harvested rice, alcohol and songpyeon (rice cakes). After the service, family members sit down together at the table to enjoy delicious food.

Beolcho (clearing the weeds around the grave) and Seongmyo (visiting ancestral graves)

Visiting ancestral graves during Chuseok is known as Seongmyo (성묘). During this visit, family members remove the weeds that have grown around the graves in the summer season, a practice which is called Beolcho (벌초). This custom is considered a duty and expression of devotion and respect for one’s family. On the weekends, about one month prior to the Chuseok holidays, Korea’s highways become extremely congested with families visiting their ancestral graves to fulfill their familial duties. The graves are then visited again during Chuseok.

Ganggangsullae (Korean circle dance)

In this dance, women dressed in Hanbok (traditional Korean clothing) join hands in a circle and sing together on a night when the full harvest moon appears or on Chuseok. There are several stories about its origin. One of the most well-known story says that the dance dates back to the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910) when the Korean army used to dress the young women of the village in military uniforms and had them circle the mountains to look like that the Korean military was greater in number than it actually was from the enemy side. The Korean army enjoyed many victories thanks in part to this scare tactic.

Chuseokbim (Chuseok dress)

Bim refers adorning oneself with new clothes for holidays or parties. Broadly speaking, there are two bims: seolbim and chuseokbim. In the past, people adorned themselves with Korean traditional dress, hanbok, but people currently purchase new western clothes or do not prepare bim at all.

Chuseok Food

Chuseok celebrates the rich harvest season when fruit and grain are abundant. Using the newly harvested rice, people make steamed rice, rice cakes, and liquor.

Songpyeon (송편) is one of the quintessential dishes for Chuseok. This rice cake is prepared with rice powder that is kneaded into a size that is a little smaller than a golf ball, and then filled with sesame seed, beans, red beans, chestnuts, or other nutritious ingredients. When steaming the songpyeon, the rice cakes are layered with pine needles to add the delightful fragrance of pine. On the eve of Chuseok, the entire family gathers together to make songpyeon. An old Korean anecdote says that the person who makes beautifully-shaped songpyeon will meet a good spouse or give birth to a beautiful baby. It is no wonder that all the single members of a family try their best to make the most beautiful songpyeon!

Another major element of Chuseok is traditional liquor. On Chuseok, families and relatives gather together and hold a memorial service for their ancestors with liquor made of the newly harvest rice. After the memorial service, they sit together and spend some time together as a family, drinking the liquor and eating the food.

Facial Contouring FAQ [Is it possible to not let the screw (used for fixing) be visible?] - Korean Plastic Surgery

Facial Contouring FAQ

[Is it possible to not let the screw be visible?]

Many of us question if the screws used on facial contouring surgeries like V-line surgery are visible on X-rays.

The answer is YES.

Then, is it possible to not let the screw (used for fixing) be visible?
We don't want to let people know about my plastic surgery history or anything in any occasions.
We are also afraid if we cannot pass the airport inspection when travelling abroad!!

Mostly in face contouring surgeries, fixing screw is made of titanium. Titanium itself is harmless to human body, but the thing is that they appear on the X-ray. If this bothers you, you may choose absorbable material screw. This absorbable screw is called INION, which is the US FDA cleared. This screw does not appear on X-ray from the very moment of surgery day. About 1 year after, when bones are totally attached, they will disappear.

How is V-line surgery done?

“Safe surgery and Accurate Diagnosis is possible with the most advanced 3D CT”

Based on 3D information, detailed surgery planning is possible which will let Operation time and riskiness be reduced. Acknowledgement of the surgical site with precise structure of bones will lead to a successful surgery. Also, exposure of radiation is 1/50 less than general CTs which is much safer for patients.

Even 1mm of error is not allowed at Wannabe.
Thus, perfect results come from our state-of-the-art facial analysis system

Plastic surgery in Korea - Rhinoplasty(hump nose correction) + PRP face fat graft (aka fat transfer)

Plastic Surgery Video of Yuri

Rhinoplasty (hump nose correction) + PRP face fat graft

The existing 2D fat graft is a method of implanting fat only on one layer of subcutaneous fat, muscle, or periosteum. Even though it is comparatively simple procedure, there is high risk of absorption and might cause bumpy skin due to unequal settlement. On the other hand, 3D Fat Graft implants fat on all layers equally, maximizing settlement, and showing smooth and natural three dimensional face.

Yuri had hump nose, volumeless face which made her look older than her actual age.
So she decided to undergo with rhinoplasty, and full face (forehead) fat graft.

Aquiline Nose (hump nose) is a nose that have a projected part on the middle due to the over growth of nose bone or nose cartilage. This is formed of innate cause or afterbirth cause and this gives a strong and negative impression to other people in personal relationship. This kind of nose could be corrected into a smoother one by reshaping the nose bridge with the Aquilin Nose Correction Method.

Wannabe's Aquiline Nose Correction Method
In order to prevent recurrence its over grown nose bone and nose cartilages should be eliminated. If the length of middle of the forehead is short, we can lengthen the space with implants. However, if the width of the nose is broad, we can shorten the width of nose bone with osteotomy. Generally, aquilin nose have developed muscles that pull end of the nose downward. By counterbalancing this muscle, we can erect the nasal tip and form a smooth line from the bridge to the tip.

Right after surgery, you may face some swelling and bruising on your face.
But don't panic, as they will start to fade away~

Taking a walk (not excessive or heavy exercises!!) and ice&hot massaging also help the swelling disappear faster

And finally!!

Her sleek nose line and well padded forehead line gives a perfect profile line~

Yuri's plastic surgery (rhinoplasty + fat transfer) full video ↓↓↓

Check out some FAQ videos regarding on fat graft (aka fat transfer) and rhinoplasty.

Is autologous fat graft permanent? If not, how long will it last?

Engraftment after auto graft is permanent. Its survival rate may vary depending on each individual, as differences can be caused from the surgical site, injection amount, fat collection, fat division, or injection method. About 60-80% shows engraftment, and PRP (platelet rich plasma) from self blood is being used to increase its survival rate.

Even well engrafted fat may be changed due to changes in body such as weight gain and loss. Also, due to aging (loss of fat volume), volume may diminish as time goes by.

How is anesthesia done in nose surgery? Is it painful?

In nose surgery, local anesthesia for the nose and sedation (sleeping) anesthesia which goes through the blood vessels are done at the same time. During surgery, you won’t feel any pain since you would be sleeping due to the sedation. You will wake up once the surgery is done, so you may stay relaxed while getting the surgery.
