What is 3D Fat Graft?

Original 2D fat graft is a method of implanting fat only on one layer of subcutaneous fat, muscle, or periosteum. Even though it is comparatively simple procedure, there is high risk of absorption and might cause bumpy skin due to unequal settlement. Is fat transfer permanent? How long will it last?

Engraftment after auto graft is permanent. Its survival rate may vary depending on each individual, as differences can be caused from the surgical site, injection amount, fat collection, fat division, or injection method. About 60-80% shows engraftment, and PRP (platelet rich plasma) from self blood is being used to increase its survival rate.

Even well engrafted fat may be changed due to changes in body such as weight gain and loss. Also, due to aging (loss of fat volume), volume may diminish as time goes by.

Where is the fat collected from?

Autologous fat can be collected from any body parts, but mostly it is collected from back/side thighs, as even skinny people have certain fat in their thighs. The procedure of collecting fat is somewhat similar to liposuction. Hence it lessens the volume of the collected area which means it can be effective to lessen the fat on a body part. However, you have to be careful as the skin may become bumpy and rough in case of excessive fat collection where there isn’t much.

Under eye fat removal is adequate when lower eyelid is bulging but tear trough is not deeply caved in, to remove the fat which is pushing the lower eyelid.

When tear trough is deeply caved in, fat removal may not be effective enough to improve the problem. Hence we need to lead the fat that is pushing the lower eyelid to actually fill the tear trough for an effective result, which is the under eye fat realignment surgery.
