FAQs about face fat grafting

What is autologous fat trasnfer (aka fat grafting, fat injection)?

A fat grafting procedure transfers fat from areas in which you have excess fat, such as the outer thighs, and injects it into areas that may be lacking in volume, such as your face, hands, breasts or buttocks. This safe, long-lasting, well-tolerated procedure produces natural-looking results. Every year, thousands of people undergo successful fat grafting and are pleased with the results.

1. Can eye, nose surgery, fat graft, etc.. be done at the same time?

Yes of course. The order goes with the eye surgery, then it comes to the nose surgery, and fat graft.
They are all possible to be done on the same day.

2. Is autologous fat graft permanent? If not, how long will it last?

Engraftment after auto graft is permanent. Its survival rate may vary depending on each individual, as differences can be caused from the surgical site, injection amount, fat collection, fat division, or injection method. About 60-80% shows engraftment, and PRP (platelet rich plasma) from self blood is being used to increase its survival rate.
Even well engrafted fat may be changed due to changes in body such as weight gain and loss. Also, due to aging (loss of fat volume), volume may diminish as time goes by.

3. Where is the autologous fat collected from?

Autologous fat can be collected from any body parts, but mostly it is collected from back/outer thighs, as even skinny people have certain fat in their thighs. The procedure of collecting fat is somewhat similar to liposuction. Hence it lessens the volume of the collected area which means it can be effective to lessen the fat on a body part. However, you have to be careful as the skin may become bumpy and rough in case of excessive fat collection where there isn’t much.

4. Does the face look big after autologous fat graft?

Face autologous fat graft is usually done on forehead, temple, cheek, and chin, which is mostly the center part of the face. Thus, once face fat graft is done, the center part of the face looks projected which lets the face line be less stick out. Hence it will give a three dimensional effect as well as making the face look smaller

5. When can we start to work out or go on a diet after autologous fat graft?

It takes about 2-3 months for fat cells to be engrafted after autologous fat graft. Thus, it is better to avoid excessive physical shock (ex. Meridian massage) and heavy diet during the skin engraftment which will be helpful to higher the skin engraftment’s survival rate. Light exercises or diet may be done about 1 month after surgery.
